New Study Finds Kombucha May Lower Blood Sugar
Kombucha has existed for thousands of years and has recently gained a mainstream following. Despite its longevity and popularity, not much clinical research has been conducted on it. We know that it contains probiotics and boasts several health benefits, but clinical proof of its benefits has been scarce. Researchers at Georgetown University are looking to change that.
In a recent pilot study, the researchers recruited participants with adult-onset diabetes. After four weeks of adding kombucha to their daily diet, the results revealed that participants experienced significantly lower blood sugar levels at the end of the trial.
Take that, sugary soda.
Overview: Kombucha May Lower Blood Sugar in People with Diabetes
In a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, researchers found that kombucha may play a role in lowering blood glucose levels. If you’re interested in some light reading, you can find the complete study here; however, for the rest of us, here’s a breakdown of the study and its findings:
Participants: Over 18 years old with type 2 diabetes
Control Group: Consume 8 oz kombucha with dinner daily
Experimental Group: Consume 8 oz unfermented sparkling drink with dinner daily
Length of Study: Four weeks
Measurements: Daily fasting blood glucose before breakfast
Outcomes: Significant decreases in fasting blood glucose of people with diabetes with elevated levels
Participants in both the control and experimental groups consumed beverages flavored with a small amount of freeze-dried ginger powder. Although twelve people participated in the study, five finished with incomplete data sets. Due to the missing data, the fasting blood glucose analysis only reflects seven participants.
Although the sample size was small, the findings provide valuable insight into a topic with few clinical studies. Please note that if you do have diabetes, it is important to consult with your physician before making changes to your diet.
